The short version
- No accounts, no sign-up, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking.
- Your settings, copy history, and saved sessions stay on your device.
- The developer never receives, stores, or sells your data.
- The internet is used only when you choose to shorten a link — and only with the provider you pick.
Copy URL Toolkit (“the Extension”) is a browser extension that helps you copy, clean, convert, share, and organize URLs. This Privacy Policy explains what data the Extension handles and how your privacy is protected. The Extension is local-first: it does not collect, sell, or transmit your data to us or to any analytics service.
01 Information we collect
None. The developer of Copy URL Toolkit does not collect, receive, store on any server, sell, or share any personal information, browsing history, or usage analytics. There are no first-party servers, no telemetry, and no user accounts.
02 Data stored on your device
To make the Extension work, the following information is stored locally in your browser (using
the chrome.storage API and IndexedDB). It stays in your browser profile and is never uploaded by
us:
- Settings — theme, default copy format, favorite formats, QR style, and shortener preferences.
- Copy history — the URLs and page titles you copy, along with favicons, the format used, timestamps, and any notes, tags, or folders you add. History can be disabled or limited in Settings and cleared at any time.
- Saved sessions — snapshots of open tabs that you choose to save.
- Templates — custom copy formats you create.
You are always in control of this data. You can export it, clear it, or remove individual items from within the Extension, and uninstalling the Extension removes it from your browser.
03 When the Extension uses the network
The Extension makes no background network requests. Network access happens only in these cases:
Link shortening (only when you click “Shorten”)
When you actively shorten a link, the single URL you are shortening is sent to the provider you selected in Settings — TinyURL, is.gd, v.gd, CleanURI, Bitly, Dub, or your own self-hosted endpoint. Chrome asks for your permission to access that provider the first time you use it. The provider returns a short link. This exchange is between you and that provider; the developer does not see or store it. Each provider has its own privacy policy.
Site icons (favicons)
To display a small icon next to a link in the interface, the Extension may load an icon image from Google’s
public favicon service (google.com/s2/favicons) using only the site’s domain — not the full URL.
This is a standard image request and no personal data is attached.
04 Permissions & why they’re used
Each permission exists to deliver a specific feature. The Extension does not read page content beyond what is needed to copy a link, and only when you invoke it.
| Permission | Why it’s needed |
|---|---|
| storage unlimitedStorage |
Save your settings and local data (history, folders, sessions, templates) on your device without a size limit. |
| activeTab scripting |
Read the current tab’s URL, title, and canonical link so it can be copied or converted — only when you invoke the Extension. No persistent content scripts. |
| tabs | Copy URLs across tabs and windows, and capture or restore saved sessions. |
| contextMenus | Provide the right-click “Copy URL Toolkit” menu. |
| notifications | Show an optional “copied” confirmation for menu and keyboard-shortcut copies. |
| offscreen | Reliably write copied text to the clipboard from the background (for menu and shortcut copies). |
| optional host permissions | Requested at runtime, per provider, only when you shorten a link. Not requested on install. |
06 Data retention & your controls
- Your data stays on your device until you remove it.
- Clear your history from Settings, or delete individual items, folders, and sessions in the Library.
- Export or back up everything (history, folders, sessions, and templates) as a single JSON file at any time.
- Uninstalling the Extension removes its locally stored data from your browser.
07 Children’s privacy
The Extension is a general-purpose utility and does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children under the age of 13.
08 Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above, and any material change will ship with a new version of the Extension. Your continued use of the Extension after an update means you accept the revised policy.
